Don't Skip The Screening

Getting a colonoscopy at age 50 used to be a rite of passage — an important one given the prevalence of colon cancer and the effectiveness of preventive screening.

Even though colon cancer, the third leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., is largely preventable, a lot of people don’t get screened. That’s because colonoscopies can be uncomfortable and intimidating.

But they aren’t the only option for screening, my colleague Dr. Andrea Klemes, chief medical officer of MDVIP, writes below. They’re also not just for people over 50, Dr. Klemes explains — screenings should now start at age 45.

If you are 45 or older and haven’t had a colonoscopy, let’s talk when you’re in the office next.

Caffeine: How much is too much?

How much coffee do you consume? Do you need a lot of caffeine to get you going? Do you ever drink energy drinks?

Caffeine is a common morning elixir, late-night booster and fatigue buster for many of us. But there is a limit. Generally, 400 mg, or about the amount of caffeine in four 8-ounce cups of coffee, is plenty – and any more can result in health issues. We should probably drink less, and for some people, any caffeine may be more than they need, as my MDVIP colleague Dr. Alan Reisinger writes. Read his article about caffeine below.

If you’re drinking a lot of caffeine, it could mean you’re not getting enough sleep. Let’s talk about it the next time you’re in for an appointment.
